Anyone who has ever tried gardening knows – you can’t control everything. You can’t tell seeds when to sprout, which plants grow, or which plants go. You don’t know if critters will chew things to shreds or a sudden cold snap leaves your flower beds dead.
You can’t control the bad surprises, but you also can’t control the good — but that inherent wildness creates a level of reward that only the unexpected truly could.

It’s the same lesson I learned from watching my parents tend to their new life in Canada, just as they tended their garden: slow and steady, prepared for the worst but always keeping their eyes on the possible best.
As Filipino immigrants, my parents had three big dreams:
First, owning a home.
Second, fillling it with a lush and fruitful garden.
Third, passing down their passion and drive for growing a good life (and a good garden) to their children.
Each of those dreams came with its own share of the unexpected.
